Unpacking the Tape of Kuhl & Leyton

    by Onajídé Shabaka

Carol Jazzar's latest exhibition features Kuhl & Leyton's colored tape works. They're drawings, paintings, and photographs all at the same time. They're unexpected yet, expected. We need more of the unexpected in their work.

The visual mix of clearly delineated and, highly abstract patterning rests on a teetering balance that put the viewer in a precarious position to either accept it or, desire more. There is the additional desire for more dimensionality in areas, such as those showing the white of the background. Pushing it to the foreground also creates a tension for the viewers to wrestle with. The agitated way the tape is applied is an additional visualizing force.

Exhibit runs through April 14, Friday & Saturday 1-5PM or by appointment.
