New Works: Photographs by En Foco’s Award Winners

    February-March, 2007

Diaspora Vibe Gallery presents New Works: Photographs by En Foco’s Award Winners, featuring Meg Escudé, Divya Murthy and Stephen Marc, along with Diaspora Vibe Gallery artists Noelle Théard and Rosamary Berrios, in conjunction with En Foco, a non-profit photography organization dedicated to nurturing and supporting photographers of Latino/a, African, Asian, Native American and Pacific Islander heritage. Founded in 1974, En Foco achieves its mission by introducing artists to local communities and a national audience, creating a cultural synergy with the general public, curators and arts professionals.

This photography exhibition explores diverse aspects of life and the marks which time has left behind. Divya Murthy from Houston, Texas, explores her homeland, documenting neighborhoods with her panoramas weaving the highly detailed images digitally and combining them with woods or other elements relevant to the subject matter. Meg Escudé, currently living in Argentina, explores one of the oldest and most traditional of the Circuses still traveling throughout Latin America, revealing the lives of its nearly 100 people and giving us a view of their life within. Stephen Marc travels the country on a quest to find artifacts to rewrite African American history and expose the institution of slavery in contemporary terms. Marc creates detailed digital photomontages exploring cultural identity, and at the same time leaves the results open to visual interpretation. Noelle Théard, grounded in documentary photography, explores transnational cultures and their by-products, especially hybrid identities and youth cultures. Théard states “As a photographer, I interpret what already exists, sometimes bringing to light unexpected juxtapositions or, on the contrary, confirming a shared history or a piece of collective memory.” Rosamary Berrios aesthetic project will find its genesis in the reflection of semantic and metaphoric languages incorporated within the object: images in motion and fixed images that will transmit their sensibility to the observer.

Miriam Romais is the Executive Director of En Foco; Editor for its Nueva Luz photographic journal, as well as a New York based photographer and curator. Her personal work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the U.S and internationally, including the Museum of the City of New York, The Smithsonian Institution, El Museo del Barrio, University of California-Berkley, Los Angeles County Museum and The National Museum of Asia, Africa, Prague and Czech Republic.

Diaspora Vibe Gallery is located in Miami’s Design District at 3938 North Miami Ave, on the second level. The Opening Reception will take place on Thursday, February 8, 2007 from 7-10pm. An artist talk and slide presentation will be held on Saturday February 10, from 2-4pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
