Identity Hidden or Revealed?
by Onajídé Shabaka
Thursday, 12 April, 2007 at MoCA was a S. Florida
movie premiere of artist Nikki S. Lee. The film, A.K.A. Nikki
S. Lee, depicts events
of the artist's life (both factual and fabricated) in the last
two years, portraying Lee as two distinct personalities, any one
of which could be Lee's true self.
The movie opens with Nikki S. Lee being interviewed
about Nikki S. Lee and shows the artist in her travels to the Venice
Biennial, a number of Lee's exhibitions, and various collector's
homes. The movie looks very much like what we find commonly on
TV with various programs featuring the lives of people as they
transverse through various activities of their lives. Here though,
Nikki S. Lee talks in the interview about herself in the third
person as if she is somebody else. As the movie progresses we find
her melding and separating from our own ideas as to who she is.
The piece moved well enough to not have us question
the journey we were being taken on. If somebody other than the
artist had made this movie would we see it in the same way? Although
the ending of the movie felt a bit stretched out and labored, the
movie was probably more interesting to the art world than the general
public.
