Gazebo? Blow off the Roof
by Onajídé Shabaka

Okay, it's not a stretch to see this structure as being a gazebo if it had a roof but, that's not my point. A gazebo is a freestanding roofed structure usually open on the sides but, when Tom Scicluna gets his hands on something it always gets twisted on it side, literally in this case. The above image was sent out in the press release so, knowing the venue, a beautiful yard at the home/ art space of Carol Jazzar, we may have expected it to be a yard party. Wrong.

Ms. Jazzar's exhibition space, beautiful as it is, hasn't seen anything like what this work did to it. The entire space was opened, elevated, and enlarged by the "gazebo." However, as can be seen by the images with the work askew, Buddha tranquilly seated, balancing the world as he see it, from his potentially precarious meditative position.
