   FAU's Delicatessen

    by Onajídé Shabaka

Florida Atlantic University, like many college and university galleries, has an exhibition that is for both students and the general public. Unfortunately, the distance between the Frost Museum of Art, FIU, the Lowe Museum of Art, UM, and, the Schmidt Gallery on the FAU campus are sixty miles from end to end, more or less.

Diana Spungin, an Adjunct Faculty of FAU curated the exhibition Delicatessen, which features 22 internationally recognized and emerging artists working in diverse media. "The exhibition," states the catalogue, "recoins the word delicatessen by bringing it back to its Latin roots, Delicatus, meaning 'giving pleasure, delight.' This more poetic interpretation is pursued in the exhibition in contrast to the more familiar meaning related to food or commerce."

Some of the works and artists are familiar, such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres and, local Cristina Lei-Rodriguez however, the variety of media leaves something for everyone. Several artists visited FAU and installed their works, including Thordis Adalsteinsdottir who created a new temporary work directly on the wall of the Schmidt Center Gallery Public Space.

Artists in the Exhibition: Thordis Adalsteinsdottir, Diann Bauer, Jane Benson, Luisa Caldwell, Elaine Chow, William Cordova, Boyce Cummings, Tracy Emin, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Ellen Harvey, Jim Hodges, Jesper Just, Nina Katchadourian, Roxy Paine, Chloe Piene, Hunter Reynolds, Christina Lei Rodriguez, Jon Rosenbaum, Andrew Scott Ross, Shazia Sikander, Jordan Wolfson, Randy Wray.
