Advancing Specifically - World Class Boxing

    by Onajídé Shabaka

World Class Boxing curated by Gean Moreno was my first opportunity to see inside the hallowed walls of the exhibition space of Dennis and Debra Scholl. I suspect that we might get to see more before the year ends. That is the hope anyway. One brief visit is not enough and, I doubt I will have another opportunity to see the exhibition because of their hours.

“Large installation work,” Dennis [Scholl] points out, “is sometimes a much better bargain than something that fits nicely in people’s apartments, because it’s much more difficult for a dealer to sell that kind of work to anywhere other than a museum.” He adds, “We’re fortunate to have the luxury of space,” which “enables us to be opportunistic.” In 2002 the Scholls converted World Class Boxing (as they continue to call the venue) into a tabula rasa for artists’ all-encompassing experiments.
