While Miami was absorbing the appointment of Miami
Art Museum's new director, Terrance Riley, Charlie Rose had Tom
Krens on his TV show. Charlie Rose is one of the best interviewers
around because he asks good questions, difficult questions, is knowledgeable
about many subjects, and knows many of his guests over a period
of years.
They discuss the role of museums, how museums function
now and into the immediate future, and all of that has implications
in our local environment. Miami Art Museum is about to undertake
a major building project. The residents of Miami-Dade County are
currently in a very high building phase and, the housing bubble
and real estate market, as noted by some national panelists on the
Diane Rehm Show, has moved into a unstable place in Miami. Mr. Riley
comes to finish the building project of the Museum
Park (Bicentennial Park), a project that had a few twists and
hidden components.
When I was a much younger college student museums
held a more prominent role in cultural life than they do today with
collectors holding and housing major works of art in private institutions
and facilities. During the 70s and 80s things began to open up some
but it hasn't been long. The housing of art and providing financial
support to maintain, archive, conserve, protect, insure and, all
that goes along with it is a great responsibility. In the domain
of the public accountability will surely be waiting at the doorstep.
